The Berkeley Highway Lab (BHL)
The Berkeley Highway Laboratory (BHL) is a test site covering 2 miles of I-80 immediately east of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Sponsored by Caltrans, the facility includes eight cameras, sixteen directional dual-inductive-loop-detector stations sampling at 60Hz, and an array of Sensys wireless detectors all dedicated to monitoring traffic for research purposes.
Click on The BHL Facility & Detectors in the left menu for a description of the testbed and its technology, Current Projects at BHL to find out what BHL is being used for, and Services and Data Archive to get first-hand data available from BHL.
News and Updates
We are upgrading our data backhaul from a point-to-point microwave link to an in-house WiMAX network. BHL will be one of the first US test-sites to evaluate a WiMAX network. WiMAX may provide an efficient solution for communications with field elements in many areas where fiber optics or DSL lines are not available.
